Project Spotlight: University of Texas Southwestern – Brain and Cancer Center

The UT Southwestern Medical Center – Brain and Cancer Center will be 565,000 square feet of new patient-centered clinical services, research, and training related to the brain and cancer. This $200,000,000 project will be located on the UT Southwestern North Campus in Dallas, Texas and will see the addition of two new buildings and a new parking lot to help serve even more patients while providing space for further cutting-edge brain and cancer research.

The expansive project includes the completion of two separate nine-story clinical and research buildings. These new facilities will be used to better serve and support the clinical and academic needs of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute.

More about the Brain Institute

The Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute is ranked as one of the top 20 neurological care hospitals in the United States. This is a focused neuroscience research laboratory facility, preserving space for a vivarium in the form of a shell space. There will be nine stories in total, and the building itself will expand patient care to around 600,000 square feet. Seven floors will also provide the space needed for additional research laboratories.

Alongside the Brain Institute and Cancer Center, there will be a six-story, stand-alone parking deck. This deck is expected to be large enough to accommodate the additional parking needs for the new complex.

More about the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Cancer Center will house all the current cancer-related services for patients other than radiation oncology. This migration to a new, larger facility will triple the campus’s cancer care capabilities and allow for further care for thousands of patients.

Next to it, the previously mentioned six-story parking deck sets aside a total of 1,200 spaces for patients, medical providers, and others. It is set adjacent to the Cancer Center building.

Some of the services that will be provided in this facility include:

  • Private treatment rooms
  • Multidisciplinary care
  • Clinical trials
  • Physical medicine
  • Telemedicine
  • Supportive care
  • Imaging
  • Genetic counseling

Zero/Six Involvement in the Construction of the Facility

Zero/Six is excited to be part of the construction team of this state-of-the art, and much needed facility. Construction is already underway and the entire project is expected to be completed by June 2022. During the pre-construction phase, Zero/Six did multiple peer reviews of the project construction documents, including drawings and specifications, and design development submissions. Additionally, there were three overall reviews throughout the construction. During the construction phase, Zero/Six is performing Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) weekly site visits with daily field reports issued by our Envelope Specialist to the client, design team, and contractor. From a commissioning perspective, Zero/Six is providing performance testing including facilitating air and water infiltration testing, roof uplift testing, expansion joint nozzle testing and high voltage electronic leak detection (ELD) as needed.
